- 만화를 워낙에 좋아하는 터라, 어렸을 적부터 내방에는 언제나 만화책이
수북히 쌓여있었다. 어른들은 당연히 어렸을 때는 그렇다 치더라도, 나이를
먹으면 만화를 떼거라 라고 훈계를 하셨지만, 20대 후반을 거치고 있는
지금도 나에겐 만화는 그 어떠한 '자기개발' 서적보다도 꿈과 희망을 불어
넣어주며, '인문학'서적보다도 교양을 풍부하게 해준다.

특히 다른 만화가보다도 '우라사와 나오키'의 작품은 한결같이 '만화'라는
범주를 넓히고 있고, 일본에선 너무 당연하지만, 한국에서는 어른들도 보는
만화라고 호평받는 만화가이다. '몬스터' 라던지 '20세기소년'등 만화이름만
말하면 '아~'하고 떠오를 정도로 네임밸류가 높고, 한번만 보면 누구나
'우라사와 나오키'의 팬이 될 정도로 작품의 충성도도 높다.
또 그만큼 상업성과 작품성이 모두 뛰어나기도 하다.

그런 나오키의 신작이였던 '플루토'는 국내에 2006년에 1권이 발매된
이후로 3년이 흐른 2009년 최근에서야 8권으로 완결이 되었다.
8권이라는 권수만 보고 재미가 없어서 빨리 끝난건가?라고 생각할지도
모르지만, 그는 재미있다고 늘려서 연재하는 것보다 할 이야기만
핵심적으로 하는 게 재미있다는 걸 알고 있는 작가라고 생각한다.

이 플루토도 비록 8권에서 완결이 되었지만, 세부적으로 이야기를 살펴보면,
스토리 밀집도도 뛰어나고, 다양한 캐릭터와 소소하게 디테일한 이야기들이
절묘하게 어우러져 있다. 특히 '플루토'라는 작품은 어느정도 나이가 있는
사람이라면 모두 알만한 일본의 만화 신이라 불리우는 '데스카 오사무'의
'아톰'작품을 리메이크 한 작품이다.

'아톰' 전체를 리메이크 한 것은 아니고, '지상 최대의 로봇'이라는 파트
부분만 '우라사와 나오키'식으로 재해석해서 정말 말그대로 리메이크
한 것인데, 주인공도 '아톰'이 아닌 '게지히트'라는 동료로봇이 담당한다.

부제에도 붙어있듯이 '지상최대의 로봇'이라는 호칭은 바로 '플루토'를
지칭하는 말이기도 한데, 이 플루토는 전 세계에서 가장 강한 7대 로봇을
말살하기 위해서 태어난 존재. 하지만 그 이유도 또 누가 만들어서 명령을
내린 건지도 알 수 없다. 이미 이해할 수 없는 전쟁에 참여해서 같은 동족의
로봇들을 수만대나 죽이면서 저마다 아픔을 갖고 살고 있었던 7대 로봇들은
이 '플루토'의 출현으로 위기에 봉착한다.

비슷한 감정들을 느끼고 동료의 죽음에 대한 슬픔과 플루토에 대한
적대심을 느낄 정도로 인공지능이 뛰어난 존재들인데, 이 작품에서는
그들의 대사 한마디 한마디와 저마다 풀어내는 개인적 이야기들은 인간인
독자들의 가슴을 뜨겁게 만드는 포인트이다.

낳지 못한다'라는 게지히트의 명대사가 기억에 남는다.
한 권 한 권마다 마치 잘 짜여진 스릴러 영화 한편을 보는 듯한 느낌을
가질 정도로 치밀한 연출력이 백미이다. 또 그가 새롭게 재창조한 '아톰'과
나머지 6인의 최대 로봇들을 보는 재미도 쏠쏠하다. '아톰'을 리메이크
했다고 해서 단순하고 유치한 만화일거라고 생각한다면 큰 코 다치게
될 것이다. 오히려 8권을 덮었을 때 도대체 무슨소리야!! 라고 내뱉고 싶지
않다면, 눈과 정신을 한시도 떼지말고 집중해야 할 것이다.
